After Two Nights

Liz stepped into Hoshi’s quarters. “Nice break?”
Hoshi looked up and smiled. “Wasn’t the same without you.” She was looking nervous and shifty, and grabbed a paper bag to try and cover her discomfort. “Hey, there was this really great shop down there, so I brought you, ummm, some souvenirs.” Hoshi produced a classic Risan statue.
“Souvenir?”
“It’s traditional.”
“Yeah. Sure.”
Liz took the statue, as Hoshi produced a pair of pink spangly fluffy handcuffs from the bag.
“And there were these...” She tailed off as she caught Liz’s expression.
“Are you going to tell me what really happened down there, or am I going to have to put my medical training to good use?”
“Ummmm...”
“Suspicious amount of presents. Guilty look. And you smell of... man.” Liz folded her arms and squared her jaw. “So you take two days off the ship and forget you have a girlfriend.”
“It wasn’t like that, we got talking and he had this really interesting language-”
“So a guy says three words of gibberish to you and you’re putty in his hands?”
“No! Will you let me finish - I couldn’t get the hang of his language-”
“So you decided to sleep with him as an apology.”
“Liz! Shut up for a second!” Liz did as she was told, but she still looked like she would erupt at any moment. “Yes, I think he was interested in me. We did spend some time together. BUT I wasn’t interested in him. I think someone told me I had a girlfriend.”
“And you smell of man because...”
Hoshi sighed. “Because we got very drunk and both passed out on the sofa last night, ok?” Liz looked doubtful. “You should be glad I didn’t come back smelling as bad as Malcolm or the Commander. I don’t even want to think what they spent their shore leave doing.”
Liz barely suppressed a shudder. The ‘Dangerous Brothers’ were bad enough on duty, thinking about what they’d be like out of uniform... actually, not thinking about it was probably preferable.
She put up her hands in surrender. “Alright, I believe you.”
“Really?”
“Yes. You’re a rotten liar.”
“Oh. Am I?” Liz nodded and Hoshi continued. “You know, I think that might not have been a language at all. Perhaps he just speaks gibberish to try and pick up passing linguists.”
Liz smiled and sat down next to Hoshi on the bed. “I think I’ve almost forgiven you. There’s one thing still missing, though.”
Hoshi leaned over and kissed her.
“Hmmmm. Pleasant, but not actually what I was looking for.”
“Really? I want witnesses to that statement.”
Liz laughed. “Still that little thing missing.”
Hoshi theatrically delved into the bag. “Hmm, little thing, little thing...”
“More of a little sentence.”
Hoshi thought for a moment. “Ummm... how were things while I was away?”
“Yep, that’s the sentence. Well, I’m so glad you asked. The doctor decided to go into a hibernation state, and then Travis came back with an allergic reaction so I had to wake him up. I’ve been having to deal with a half insane, half asleep, belligerent Denobulan whilst you have been off having a good time. And he’s damn heavy to pick up off the floor.”
“And you were criticising me for getting close to alien men?”
“Watch it. He was talking in Denobulan half the time, so how about next time I send you to deal with him?”
“Sorry, sorry, I can see how dealing with an insane Dr. Phlox could be difficult. I sympathise. Now am I forgiven?”
“I don’t know. Still something missing.”
“What?”
“I’m not sure.” Liz looked thoughtful. Hoshi relaxed, a bad idea since Liz used the opportunity to grab her arms and handcuff her to the bed in one fluid motion. “Oh, now I remember. Punishment.”
Her eyes lit up and Hoshi whimpered.
